Overview of the Christian Flag

The Christian flag is a white, blue and red-colored flag that represents Christianity. It features a white field with a blue square in the upper-left corner. Within the blue square is a red-colored cross. The cross, of course, represents the cross on which Jesus died. The blue square, on the other hand, represents the baptism waters. The Christian flag combines these elements to offer a traditional flag that directly symbolizes Christianity.
The Christian flag is commonly used by the following denominations of Christianity:

  • Anglican
  • Baptist
  • Lutheran
  • Methodist
  • Presbyterian
  • Quaker
  • Reformed

Origins of the Christian Flag

The Christian flag has origins dating back to the 19th century. In 1897, a church on Coney Island, New York held a service in which the superintendent asked students for input on a design for a Christian flag. The superintendent didn’t explicitly seek designs from the church’s students, but it paved the way for the modern-day Christian flag, nonetheless.
Several years after the aforementioned service, the superintendent met with Ralph Diffendorfer of the Methodist Young People’s Missionary Movement, after which the pair began to design the Christian flag. After designing the Christian flag, they approached the Federal Council of Churches with it. It didn’t happen overnight, but in 1942, the Federal Council of Churches officially adopted their design. Since then, the Christian flag has been recognized as the official flag of Christianity.

How to Choose a Christian Flag

When choosing a Christian flag, there are several things you should consider. You can find the Christian flag in different materials. If you intend to display it outdoors, you may want to choose a nylon Christian flag. Nylon flags are stronger and more durable than those made of cotton, linen and other traditional fabrics. You can display a nylon Christian flag outdoors without fear of it succumbing to the elements.
You should also choose a Christian flag with high-quality stitching. Like with other flags, some flags are made with low-quality stitching that can unravel and fray. High-quality stitching is a sign of craftsmanship that will protect a Christian flag from premature wear and tear – especially on the fly end.
If you’d like to get a flag that has all of these features carefully crafted into it, choose the Christian flag from Star Spangled Flags.

Who designed the Christian Flag and what is the history?

The history of the Christian Flag is very interesting. The flag was designed by Charles C. Overton of New York. He was asked to speak at Brighton Chapel on Coney Island in Brooklyn, at a Sunday School kick-off because the guest speaker did not show. During his speech he noticed the American flag near-by and started speaking about the flag and it’s symbolism, which spurned the idea that Christians should have their own flag. So he added a verbal picture of what the Christian’s flag might look like to his speech. The idea of a Christian Flag stayed on his mind so he teamed up with Ralph Diffendorfer in 1907 to produce and promote the flag and it was adopted by the United States Federal Council of Churches in 1942.

What is the design on the Christian Flag and what does it represent?

The Christian flag has a white field with a blue canton on which lies a red cross. The white represents purity, peace, and forgiveness. The blue stands for truth, loyalty, and heaven. The red cross symbolizes the blood shed by Christ by His work of salvation.
Other descriptions are blue and white flag with cross, white flag blue square red cross, white flag with blue square and red cross, white flag blue corner red cross, and white flag with red cross in corner.

What is the pledge to the Christian Flag?

The pledge to the Christian Flag is as follows: “I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for Whose kingdom it stands; one Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again, with life and liberty for all who believe.”

Why is the Christian Flag called a “free flag”?

Christian flags are called a free flag because it has no earthly bonds or allegiances. It has no ruler except for Christ and Christ alone. It exists for ALL of the world’s people without limitation, not just Baptist. The flag cannot be controlled by any Nation or denomination. It freely belongs to everyone but is owned by no one.
