Write Your Veteran Resume Like a Pro

Creating a resume can often be a very difficult task for many people to take on, no matter what profession they are going into. It is usually a tough thing to make yourself a desirable hire to an employer based on your job history and skill set alone, when personal interviews can take you so far. When you are a veteran, putting together a resume can unfortunately be an even more difficult task to accomplish than any other citizen as you posses an entirely different kind of skill set that is not commonly found in the workplace today. If you are a veteran who is struggling to put together the perfect resume, here are a few helpful tips and tricks to get you to jump off the page at any employer.

When it comes to putting together a perfect resume as a veteran of a branch in the military, the number one goal should be to put it in a way that an employer can adequately understand and to describe the skills in a way that they can easily transition into practical ways in the civilian workforce. One of the best ways you can hold an employer’s attention when they are reading a resume is to keep it short, simple, and to the point. While you may think you have an incredible amount of experience that can fill out two to three pages, many employers will not bother reading past the first page, so making that first page an attention grabber is key. Only include the important things that can truly transition over to the specific field you are applying for.

Whether you were a part of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines, each branch has their own lingo that they communicate with that helps them to be more efficient. Unfortunately, this will not translate well to the citizen workforce, making it an easy thing to lose a potential employer. Try and keep this vocabulary out of the resume writing, and you will be a better suited candidate for the position.

While there are many details and specific aspects of your military background that you can avoid when you are filling out your resume, it is still important to include the critical and valuable skills that you did pick up while serving. Your teamwork skills are likely unmatched in any workplace, making you a highly sought after talent for any employer. Combine that with your unique critical thinking talent, and anyone would be lucky to have you as an employee.

So there you have it, a simple guide to landing a job with a great resume. Follow some of these tips and tricks and you will be well on your way to a great job as a veteran.
