Maryland state flag

The Maryland flag, adopted in 1904, consists of the arms of 2 different families: the Calverts and the Crosslands. The Calvert family, (gold and black design), was connected with Lord Baltimore, founder of Maryland, while the Crossland family, (red and white design), was the name of the mother of George Calvert, first Lord of Baltimore. These two arms are shown in diagonal corners from each other on the state flag.

Its location played a great role during the Civil War where one of the most significant battles known as “Battle of Antietam” took place on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Though a number of brave combatants lost their lives, the “Battle of Antietam” was a strategic victory that ended General Robert E. Lee’s Invasion of the North.
