Make a Cash Donation

One of the easiest ways to support our troops is by donating money. There are currently more than 400,000 military charities out there, each of which has its own unique goals and objectives. When donating cash to any charity organization, it’s important to research the organization beforehand. Some of the top military charities include the Army Emergency Relief, the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society the Wounded Warrior Project, and the Air Force Assistance Funds. These organizations provide financial, educational, and other forms of assistance to military personnel and their families.

Volunteer at a Veterans Hospital

Many Americans show their support for U.S. troops by volunteering at a local Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital. Regardless of the state in which you live, chances are there’s a VA hospital nearby that needs your help. Even if it’s for just a couple hours on the weekend, volunteering will help troops who have scarified so much for our country. To learn more about VA volunteer work, check out http://www.volunteer.va.gov/. Here you’ll find tons of helpful resources on where and how to volunteer at a VA hospital.

Books for Soldiers

Have some old books lying around your house that you no longer want or need? Why not donate them to the military. Books for Soldiers is a nonprofit organization that sends books, DVDs and other media to troops who are deployed abroad. Once you become a member, you can mail them your unwanted books and DVDs, at which point they will ship them to various bases. Soldiers are always in need of entertainment, and there’s no better form of entertainment than a good book or DVD. Besides, most of us have at least a few unwanted books or DVDs lying around the house.

Donate to the Freedom Calls Foundation

The Freedom Calls Foundation is a nonprofit organization that offers free videoconferencing services to servicemen and women and their families. Ask any soldier and they’ll agree: one of the toughest parts of being deployed is missing your family. With videoconferencing, however, troops can stay in contact with their loved ones.

Donate or Volunteer to Homes for Our Troops

Last but not least, consider donating or volunteering to Homes for Our Troops. This organization works to build new homes or improve existing homes for veterans who have been injured in combat. While the exact number remains unknown, some sources claim there to be more than 5 million disabled U.S. veterans, many of whom are still living in unmodified houses. Homes for Our Troops seeks to correct this issue by modifying their homes so they can enjoy a normal life.
