What Is the Flag of Los Angeles?

Did you know that the city of Los Angeles has its own official flag? It’s not the same as the California flag. While the California flag depicts a grizzly bear along with the phrase “California Republic,” the Los Angeles flag features the city’s municipal seal and three horizontal bars. What is the Los Angeles flag exactly, and who was responsible for designing it?

Origins of the Los Angeles Flag

The Los Angeles flag has origins dating back to the early 1930s. It was designed by Roy Silent and E.S. Jones for use in the Los Angeles sesquicentennial. During the city’s sesquicentennial in 1931, the Los Angeles flag was displayed. This paved the way for other uses of the Los Angeles flag. Today, you can still find the Los Angeles flag displayed during relevant events and ceremonies throughout Los Angeles.

What Does the Los Angeles Flag Symbolize?

Like most official flags, the Los Angeles flag holds symbolism. It doesn’t just feature a random design. Instead, the Los Angeles flag has a meticulous design with deep meaning.

As shown in the photo above, the Los Angeles flag consists of three horizontal bars. The first bar is green. The second bar is gold. And the third bar is red. The green bar represents olive trees, which are commonly found in Los Angeles. The gold bar represents oranges, which are also found in Los Angeles. The red bar represents grape vineyards. Los Angeles, of course, is known for its world-class grape vineyards.

How Popular Is the Los Angeles Flag?

As a city flag, the Los Angeles flag is very popular. A survey conducted by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) found that the Los Angeles flag was the 33rd most popular city flag in the United States. There were 150 total city flags ranked in this survey.

Fun Facts About the Los Angles Flag

It’s a little-known fact that the Los Angeles flag once took a trip into space. In 1984, the Space Shuttle Challenger carried the Los Angeles flag into space. Upon landing, the Los Angeles flag was retrieved and preserved. It’s not on display at the Los Angeles City Hall.

While the Los Angeles flag was designed in the early 1930s, the seal depicted in the center of it has been around since 1905. The Los Angeles flag features the city’s official seal along with three horizontal bars. The Los Angeles seal was adopted on March 27, 1905. Roy Silent and E.S. Jones later used the seal when designing the Los Angeles flag.
