The flag of Pakistan contains a green field on which lies a white crescent moon and a five-rayed star in the center. Along the hoist (left) side of the flag lies a vertical white stripe. Though the green color is mandated only as “dark green”, its’ official and most consistent representation is Pakistan green, which is shaded distinctively darker. The flag is commonly referred to as the “Flag of the Star and Crescent”, which is mentioned in the country’s national anthem.

The green represents the Muslim majority in Pakistan and the white stripe represents religious minorities. The crescent represents Islam and the five-pointed star represents the Five Pillars of Islam. The flag symbolizes Pakistan’s commitment to Islam and the rights of religious minorities. The crescent is also said to represent progress and the five-rayed star represents light and knowledge. Pakistan is bordered by Afghanistan and Iran to the northwest, and India to the southeast.

The national flag of Pakistan was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947, just three days before the country’s independence, when it became the official flag of the Dominion of Pakistan. The flag was designed by Syed Amir-uddin Kedwaii, a member of the Council of the All-India Muslim League. The flag’s design was inspired by the flag of the All-India Muslim League, a body that fought for the creation of an Islamic state.
