The New York state flag features the state of New York Coat of Arms on a field of deep blue. At the top of the Coat of Arms’ shield is a bright rising sun surrounded by numerous sunbeams, symbolizing a hope for a bright future. Shown on the Hudson River sailing toward each other is a three masted, square rigged ship and a Hudson River sloop, which represent inland and foreign commerce. Below the shield is a white banner displaying New York State’s motto, “Excelsior”, Latin for “Ever Upward”, signifying a reach for even higher goals. Above the shield is an American eagle facing right with his wings spread, standing on a world globe which symbolizes might, power, dominance and protection while looking forward to New York’s bright future. The world globe exhibits the eastern and western continents representing the old and new brought together. Two ladies, “Liberty and Justice”, are the shield’s supporters. The Phrygian cap typically represents freedom from slavery because these caps were given to Roman slaves when freed as a symbol of Liberty.
