What is the design on the Delaware state flag and what does it represent?

The state flag of Delaware consists of a colonial blue field upon which lies the state’s Coat of Arms placed on a buff colored diamond shape. Below the diamond, is the date, December 7, 1787. The coat of arms portrays a shield supported by a farmer holding a hoe, on the left and a soldier with a musket, on the right. Above the shield is a sailing ship and below the shield is a banner which displays the state motto: “LIBERTY AND INDEPENDENCE”. The shield is divided into three sections. The top section depicts a sheaf of wheat and an ear of corn. The middle section is a blue zigzag shaped stripe, and the bottom section is a picture of an ox standing on a field of green grass. The colonial blue and buff colors used on the flag represent the colors of General George Washington’s uniform. The diamond shape central on the flag is a reflection of the comment of Thomas Jefferson that Delaware is a “jewel” among the states due to its location on the eastern coast. The date, December 7, 1787 represents the day that Delaware became the first state to establish the United States Constitution, hence becoming the first state of the United States. The ship is a symbol of New Castle County’s ship building industry and Delaware’s extensive coastal commerce. The sheaf of wheat was adapted from the Sussex County seal and represents the agricultural strength of Delaware. The corn is taken from the Kent County seal and represents the agricultural basis of Delaware’s economy. The farmer represents the central role of farming to the state. The soldier represents the essential role of the citizen-soldier to the preservation of American liberties. The ox symbolizes the importance of animal husbandry to the state economy. How do I fly my Delaware flag with my American flag?

When flying the Delaware flag with the flag of the United States on the same pole, the flag of United States must always be at the top and the Delaware flag should be the same size or smaller. When It is flown on separate poles, the Delaware flag will be to the right of the flag of the United States situating the U.S. flag in the position of honor, which is to the observer’s left of the other flags.
