What Are Flag Holidays?

Flag holidays are days of the year on which it’s particularly fitting to display the American flag. It’s specifically mentioned in the U.S. Flag Code.

The U.S. Flag Code is a piece of legislation that contains guidelines for displaying, handling and retiring the American flag. In the “Time and occasions for display” section of the U.S. Flag Code, you’ll discover a section containing flag holidays. The section states that the American flag should be “displayed on all days, especially on:” Proceeding this is a list of flag holidays.

New Year’s Day Is a Flag Holiday

There are dozens of flag holidays, one of which is New Year’s Day. New Year’s Day is a time of celebration. And like all other flag holidays, it’s the perfect time of year to display the American flag.

The U.S. Flag Code lists New Year’s Day as a flag holiday. You can still display the American flag on other days of the year. Flag holidays like New Year’s Day are simply particularly fitting for the American flag.

In addition to New Year’s Day, other flag holidays listed in the U.S. Flag Code include Inauguration Day, Armed Forces Day, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and many others.

How to Display the American Flag on New Year’s Day

If you plan on displaying it outdoors, you should choose an American flag that’s made of a weather-resistant material. All American flags feature the same design consisting of 13 stripes and 50 stars, but you can find them in different materials, such as cotton, nylon and polyester. Cotton American flags are inexpensive and easy to clean. For superior protection against the elements, though, you may want to choose a nylon or polyester American flag.

You can display the American flag by mounting it to the flagpole. A no-tangle flagpole is the perfect choice for a patio. As their name suggests, no-tangle flagpoles are designed to prevent the American flag from wrapping around itself. You can display the American flag throughout New Year’s Day and the rest of the New Year by mounting it to a no-tangle flagpole.
