You don’t have to display the American flag outdoors. While many homeowners and business owners prefer to display it outdoors, others choose to display it indoors.
Displaying the American flag indoors has its advantages. You don’t have to worry about sunlight and bad weather degrading it, for instance, and you can integrate the American flag into your home’s decor. But if you’re going to display it indoors, there are a few tips you should follow.
Choose the Right Type of American Flag
Start by choosing the right type of American flag. For indoor usage, you may want to choose a cotton American flag. Cotton flags are lightweight, vibrant and easy to clean. And when compared to nylon and polyester flags, they typically cost less as well.
You may want to choose a nylon or cotton American flag for outdoor usage. If you’re going to display it indoors, though, a cotton American flag may prove to be a better choice.
Display Horizontally or Vertically
You can display the American flag either horizontally or vertically indoors. When displaying the American flag horizontally, the union should be to the observer’s left. When displaying the American flag vertically, the union should be in the top-left corner — also to the observer’s left.
Most people prefer to the display American flag horizontally indoors. Using just a few clips, you can hang the American flag horizontally with the union to the observer’s left. But another option is to display the American flag vertically indoors. As long as there’s enough vertical space on a given wall, you can hang the American flag vertically.
Clean Regularly
Even if you plan on displaying it indoors, you’ll still need to clean the American flag. Flags will inevitably accumulate dust and debris when displayed indoors. Over time, all of this dust and debris can settle in the flag’s material while subsequently creating hard-to-remove stains. You can prevent this from happening, however, by regularly cleaning the American flag.
Depending on what type of American flag you purchase, you may be able to wash it. You can hand wash cotton flags, for example. After washing a cotton American flag, you can then hang it on a line to dry.
Displaying the American Flag With a State Flag
You can display the American flag with a state flag. When doing so, the American flag should be at the top. The state flag should be displayed below the American flag. This rule applies when displaying the two flags either indoors or outdoors.
