Say ‘Thanks’ to Veterans

Veterans Day Concerts

Held annually on November 11, Veterans Day is a nationally recognized public holiday that’s intended to honor veterans of the U.S. military. According to the Census Bureau, there are approximately 21.8 million veterans living in the United States. These brave men and women have sacrificed so much so that we can be free of tyranny and oppression. Veterans Day is designed to honor these veterans, with the public showing support for everything they’ve done.

Parades

Depending on where you live, there may be a local parade taking place on Veterans Day. Dozens of cities throughout the country host local parades on November 11. In some of these parades, veterans and active service members participate. Additionally, you’ll often find food vendors set up nearby to celebrate Veterans Day. If you’re interested in attending one of these parades, check your local news to see when and where they are taking place. Being that Veterans Day falls on a Saturday this year (2017), parades will probably occur that same time.

Free Admission to National Parks

You might be surprised to learn that many national parks waive their regular admission fee on Veterans Day. As explained on the National Park Service (NPS) website, it waives admission fees on all national parks for 10 days out of the year, two of which occur on Veterans Day weekend. This means you and your family can attend of our country’s amazing national parks for free on November 11-12.

Say ‘Thanks’

So, how can you honor our nation’s military veterans on Veterans Day? One of the easiest and most meaningful ways is to say “thanks.” A verbal “thanks for everything you’ve done” is all it takes to show your appreciation. Alternatively, you can write “thank you” cards and notes to send to veterans. It’s the little gestures such as this that go a long ways in showing your appreciation.

Concerts

Some cities and municipalities are also planning concerts for Veterans Day. Again, you’ll have to check with your local area to determine when and where these concerts will take place. Normally, they occur in and around larger cities, though some smaller areas may also host their own concerts.

If you’re interested in learning more about Veterans Day and how to support our nation’s military veterans, check out the official Military.com website here. The most important thing, however, is to make it a year-round activity. Rather than only recognizing and honoring veterans on November 11, you should do it on a regular basis.
